When You Dream

To say that Adam is exhausted would be the understatement of the year. He works at night, and when he’s not working, he’s juggling spending time with Becky and Luke, and each of them individually as well, and talking to the real estate agent, trying to get the house sold, and trying to find a house on the island to buy. He’s taking extra hours so they have more money so he really can give Becky the house of her dreams. He rarely ever gets a moment to sit. He’s sure that at this point, his feet are just going to pop off of his legs and run away.

But today he got out early. He gets home an hour earlier than usual, and Becky is still asleep. He takes off his shoes, and quietly changes into a pair of sweats and a t-shirt and makes his way into the nursery. Luke is wide awake, staring up at the (iron) mobile that hangs above his crib. Adam has been told they’re lucky, because Luke almost never cries. He was worried at first, but now he’s just glad he doesn’t have to deal with it all the time. Luke has very healthy set of lungs, and it’s not fun to listen to.

Adam smiles down at Luke, leaning over the side of the crib and picking him up. He sits with him in the rocking chair for awhile, talking to him and just staring at him in amazement. He thought he’d be used to it by now, but Luke seems to amaze him more and more every day. The fact that he had a hand in making something as beautiful as Luke is just incredible to him. He’s positive he’s never loved anything this much in his life.

Luke starts to get fussy and Adam stands, taking him downstairs into the kitchen to make him a bottle, as well as some coffee for himself. He tests the temperature and paces the kitchen as Luke eats. When they’re finished with breakfast, Adam sets Luke in his little chair thing, he forgets what the actual name is for it, and picks up his guitar. He’s gotten better since Joey… He’s been practicing whenever he has time. And Luke seems to like it, so he plucks a few strings, testing the sound and starts playing as softly as he can, not wanting to wake up Becky.

He sings a little too, but only for Luke. He’s still too worried everyone else would make fun of him.

“With life just begun, my sleeping new son
Has eyes that roll back in his head
They flutter and dart, he slows down his heart
And pictures a world past his bed
It’s hard to believe, as I watch you breathe
Your mind drifts and weaves…”

Sooner would be better.

And I’m sorry if I break your anything.

How about we just hope you don’t?

No promises, honey.

*sighs and focuses on driving*

*laughs a little* It’s not you, honey, it’s the cupids.

We’ll see if you still think that when he’s actually on his way.

Don’t be offended if I threaten to wax you smoother than a twelve year old, okay?

I promise not to take offense to anything you say.

*reaches over to take his hand, squeezing it gently* You’ll be great.  He’s gonna love you.  I know it.  *squeezes it harder and winces, leaning as far forward as she can* Why does this have to hurt so much?

I’m sorry in advance by the way. I’m told I’m going to be assured that this is all my fault a lot.

No, I just have to be something I never had for at least the next eighteen years.

You can’t do that, you need me to drive!

And I can’t help it, I get clinical when I get nervous. Bad habit.

*lip trembles* Why are you nervous?  You don’t have to push a six to eight pound baby out of your body.

No, I just have to be something I never had for at least the next eighteen years.

It’s normal though. First children are always either early or late. So just be thankful he’s impatient and you don’t have to go an extra few weeks like some women do.

*gives him a vicious glare* If you get clinical on my, I’m going to smash your face into the steering wheel.

Johnny may have mentioned that it would happen a little early. But he didn’t tell me how early.

*leans forward in her seat, groaning* You’re lucky I need you to drive.
